How to Build Stronger Glutes

Strong glute training combines sensible exercise selection with progressive challenge, recovery and enough consistency for adaptation.

Start with what the glutes do

The gluteal region includes the gluteus maximus, medius and minimus. Rather than trying to isolate every anatomical action perfectly, build training around complementary movement patterns.

Use more than one pattern

Hip-extension movements such as bridges or hip thrusts, squat/lunge patterns, hinges and abduction or stability work can all have a place. Your exact menu depends on equipment, comfort and the rest of your training.

Progress the training

Exercises need to become meaningfully more challenging over time. Depending on the movement, that can mean more resistance, more repetitions within a useful range, greater control, longer range of motion or a harder variation.

Don't confuse activation with the workout

Light activation drills can be useful preparation, but feeling a muscle burn is not the same as providing the full progressive stimulus of a training plan. See our activation guide.
